How much plonk or real wine does it take to murder brain cells?

resveratrol
reluctant asked:

Lots of recent reports would have it that regularly drinking red wine spiffs up your health, because of the “resveratrol” in them. After being a teetotaller for many years, I took up slurping red wines (primarily the fairly decent plonks Carlo Rossi Paisano and Chianti). I’ve been doing up large glasses of wine four times a week, each about 8 ounces. This is apparently enough for health benefits, plus people have been shown in studies to think better after moderate amounts of alcohol (with emphasis on “moderate”, which obviously precludes lurching bouts of sheer drunkenness).

But one does worry about little alcohol soldiers marching about and slaughtering brain cells if one should, say, occasionally laugh gleefully and down not one, but two in a row of those extra-sized McGlasses of plonk. Is there any basis for worrying like an old lady about it?

The old rule, whether true or not, said one ounce of alcohol killed 10,000 brain cells. It was touted by the government and medical “experts” as true. Fortunately, we have many, many millions of those little critters, so the moderate drinking of wine doesn’t really matter.
